In regards to the caring, protection and overall upbringing of our community's children, it has been said that it would take a village to be successful at this most pressing responsibility.  This saying is even more true for the children whose present guardians are falling short and instead neglect or even abuse their children.  In these cases, the role of the "village", our community, becomes even more critical in order to provide opportunities for these children to overcome the enormous odds.

In our role as advocates, Voices for Kids CASA is committed to helping ensure safe, permanent homes for all children served by the program, and continues to seek the aid of those in our community who will share in our commitment.  When Larry Pope, President and CEO of Smithfield Foods, Inc., heard our plea for community assistance, the company responded by giving a $5000 donation and pledged a continued partnership with the program to help recruit, train and support volunteers who help the children successfully navigate through the child welfare/court system.  Mr. Pope expressed his passion for children and their right to hope-filled futures, "Every child deserves an opportunity, no matter where they come from, they deserve a chance to do something positive.  Once that opportunity is given, it is then up to them, but at least they had an opportunity."

Touched by the generosity and the support of Smithfield Foods, Michele Jones, Voices for Kids CASA Volunteer and Board President, presented Mr. Pope with a commemorative plaque in honor of the new partnership.  Much of the community work supported by Smithfield Foods is focused on providing children with opportunities, especially in the area of education, and as stated by Mr. Pope, "Your volunteers provide opportunities for these kids."
